America, Horse With No Shame (Todd Terje re-edit)

iTunes tells me this is my most played track. I'm OK with that.

I remember this setting the room alight at one of our NZ Southsidesoul gigs - the "I Love A Man In Uniform" one, I think, because it took place just after the 2009 Big Day Out and half the room probably thought this was Neil Young. Bless.

My Mine, Hypnotic Tango

Road trips chez nous are all about plugging in the iPod and setting it to play tracks / artists in alphabetical order rather than leaving it to shuffle which invariably throws out the same tracks again and again. This means we get to hear a whole bunch of nuggets we haven't heard in ages, or indeed at all.

A recent roadie to Russell threw up all manner of rarely-heard niceness, including the glorious Hypnotic Tango by My Mine, a track I stumbled upon one Wednesday night at Nag Nag Nag in 2004, thanks to an early use of Shazam.

I'd first put Shazam to the test while working at Mixmag in 2002 and, according to my blog at the time, "found it severely lacking", so - fast-forwarding to 2004 - I was astounded that it not only recognised this fairly obscure tune (on a very loud dancefloor), but also this even more obscure one.

A toast to you, Shazam - saviour of trainspotters everywhere.

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Messages / Human League, Being Boiled / Tubeway Army, Down In The Park

I'm going home tonight to make the most of the new needle on my Majestic Stereogram and listen to my favourite classic vinyl that will sound better than ever. Well, better than it ever has on this Majestic Stereogram anyway.

Kicking off the marathon, this awesome synth comp from 1980.

Son Of Dave, Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger / Bonkers / Devil Take My Soul

So the Big Day Out line-up was announced and everyone yawned.

Well I did... but then it's never about the headliners, it's all about the Lilyworld, and the Lilyworld never got any better than Big Day Out 2009 when Son of Dave performed to a small yet perfectly formed twilight crowd who had eschewed the big stages to hear this marvellous one-man-electro-blues-band.

Looking back I can't believe there weren't more people there - the other acts on stage at that time included the likes of Serj Tankian,  The Trons, Zane Lowe and Silent Disco, hardly setting the world on fire. But if you missed his set, don't worry, you're not alone - even the chap chose to go see My Morning Jacket (paarrrrrp). He won't admit it, but I know he still regrets his decision.

Anyway, check out the below and consider yourself told. You won't make that mistake again.

PS - how FUCKING AWESOME is Bonkers? You haven't heard Dizzee til you've heard Dave do Dizzee...
